Massage is the use of natural touch and involves structured physical manipulations of soft body tissue and muscles for therapeutic purposes.

In its various forms, massage can be used to stimulate or relax and has been used throughout history for both its physical and psychological benefits.

Sports Massage

Sports Massage could help with many health conditions through these techniques such as:

  • Maintain the body generally in better condition
  • Prevent injuries and loss of mobility
  • Improve and restore mobility to injured muscle/tendon & ligament tissue
  • Boost sporting performance
  • Extend the overall life of an active and/or sporting career
  • Improve posture and prevent back/shoulder neck pains
  • Relieve migraine & headaches
  • Improve overall muscle tone
  • Boost circulation & reduce cellulite

Why have a sports massage treatment?

There are 3 main areas that sports massage can help with.

Physically, the effects of massage are improved circulation of blood and nutrients, increased tissue permeability enabling fluids and nutrients to pass through, stretching tissues that could not be stretched in the usual methods, breaking down scar tissue – from previous injuries, which can lead to inflexible tissues that are prone to injury and pain, improve tissue elasticity and opening micro-circulation.

Physiologically, the effects of sports massage are pain reduction in many ways including releasing the body's endorphins and relaxation through heat generated, circulation and stretching.

Psychologically, the effects of massage are a nxiety reduction through the effects mentioned above as relaxation is induced and invigorating, if massage is done with brisk movements i.e. before an event.

What benefits are there?

Anyone who routinely stretches their physical limits through movement such as running, cycling, hiking, swimming, dancing, tennis and other racquet sports, strength training and aerobics can benefit from a sports massage. There are others who do strenuous activities in a day, which are not normally classed as exercise, such as mums with small children, gardeners, builders and others who are very active in their work.

Please note that the day after a deep massage you may feel a little sore especially if you are not used to it. It is advised not to have a deep sports massage the day before an important competition unless you are sure it works for you. Leave a day or so to recover and then reap the benefits. After an event, then massage is definitely recommended to aid recovery.
