Massage is the use of natural touch and involves structured physical manipulations of soft body tissue and muscles for therapeutic purposes.
In its various forms, massage can be used to stimulate or relax and has been used throughout history for both its physical and psychological benefits.
Swedish Holistic Body Massage
The massage strokes used in Swedish Massage relate to the circulatory and lymphatic systems in the body and were put together into a full body routine by Pehr Henrik Ling, a Swedish physiologist.
The technique incorporates a variety of moves, which relax and / or tone the muscles and increase blood and oxygen supply to the tissues. This promotes soft tissue and muscle health whilst aiding toxin release.
The nervous system is also stimulated so soothing the nerves, giving both physical and emotional benefits, especially with stress management or muscle tension.
Massage could help with many health conditions through these techniques such as:
- Headaches & migraines
- Abdominal, muscle and back pain
- Pain caused by injury or stress
- Muscle & nervous tension
- Fatigue & lethargy, poor energy levels
- High blood pressure
- Poor sleep patterns
- Stiff or aching joints & muscles
- Poor skin & muscle tone
- Poor circulation & cellulite
- Water retention

Other benefits include:
- Massage encourages the body systems to function more efficiently and therefore could help improve the healing process for damaged tissue
- Circulation is usually improved and the skin condition may appear softer and smoother due to the massage itself and the oils/lotions applied
The Massage Session
Before your first session you will complete a health questionnaire to ensure that massage is suitable for you.
This also gives you the opportunity of letting your therapist know of any particular area of concern so that the massage can be adapted to your own, individual requirements.
It is advisable not to have a large meal or any alcohol before receiving your massage.
Try to plan for a relaxing period after your massage, if at all possible.
Each massage session is adapted for the individual and can vary in length between ½ & 1 full hour accordingly. Allow extra time before the initial session for your health consultation.
